Enriquez Claims Swaso Penalized for Supporting FOI Disclosure

Social activist Jerry Enriquez says the government’s decision not to renew the contract of retired Major Swaso sends the wrong message and weakens the importance of that office. As we’ve previously reported, Enriquez filed a Freedom of Information request back in August, seeking details on how much the Briceño administration paid attorneys involved in recent constitutional cases. In October, the Ombudsman ruled in his favor, recommending that the Attorney General’s Ministry release part of that information. Now, speaking with News Five today, Enriquez says he believes Swaso is being punished for supporting his fight for transparency.

Jerry Enrqiuez, Social Activist

“I think it is a deliberate act by the government of Belize to undermine anyone who stand for what is right and when it is uncomfortable or inconvenient for the Government of Belize, they are taken out of office. Normally these offices, it is interesting to see if it will be replaced with a pliable political servant rather than a person who is committed to the laws of Belize and the constitution of Belize. The Ombudsman does not serve the Cabinet or the government. It is an independent office to serve the people of Belize and to look after justice for the people of Belize.”

Paul Lopez

“Do you share the view that his contract was not renewed because he elevated the cause you were fighting?”

Jerry Enriquez

“I definitely share that view. Normally the Ombudsman would be in office for a renewable term for at least nine years. this one is a shocker so there is a lot of concerns to be raised. The government has destroyed the credibility of the office and we are watching very closely to see who will replace him and if there is that level of commitment to the constitution and laws of Belize.”
