South Africa Welcomes China, Russia, Iran Warships
South Africa has opened its waters to naval forces from China, Russia and Iran, which has triggered concern at a time of strained US relations.
Warships from the three countries began a week-long joint naval exercise off the coast of Cape Town on Saturday, reported Reuters. The manoeuvres, titled ‘Will for Peace 2026,’ are taking place under the expanded BRICS Plus framework, which now includes nations such as Egypt, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates.
South African authorities said the aim is to “ensure the safety of shipping and maritime economic activities” and to improve cooperation among participating navies.
The exercises come at a sensitive time. US President Donald Trump has accused BRICS nations of pursuing “anti-American” policies and has threatened new trade tariffs against member states.
Meanwhile, South Africa’s main opposition party argued that hosting the drills undermines the government’s claim of non-alignment and risks the country’s neutrality. Critics say the involvement of Iran and Russia, both under Western sanctions, could deepen diplomatic strains with Washington.
The drills run until January 16.
