The National Elite Basketball League (NEBL) is back after a five-year break, promising one of the biggest cash prizes in Belizean sports history.

Operations Manager Karim Juan said the relaunch aims to restore confidence after the league’s last season in 2020 was cut short by COVID-19. “The rebranding back to NEBL was more trying to symbolise a new start, symbolise stability,” he explained.

The headline attraction this season is a $100,000 cash prize, believed to be among the largest ever in Belizean sports. First place will take home $70,000, while second place earns $30,000.

While the league is still securing additional sponsors, Juan guarantees “that the $100,000 is locked. That’s a guarantee.”

Seven teams have confirmed participation: Corozal Spartans, Orange Walk Running Rebels, Belize City Defenders, San Pedro Tiger Sharks, Belmopan Trojans, Cayo Western Ballaz, and EZ Investments Griga Dream Ballers.

The season will follow the traditional home-and-away format, with 12 games per team. A new rule allows each team three non-resident players, including Belizeans living abroad.

To support smaller-market teams, the league will now cover major expenses. “The league will be responsible to shoulder all transportation costs for all teams when they travel for a road game… security for all games… medics… promotions,” Juan said.

Opening night is set for February 20 at the Belize City Civic Center, featuring two games and a lineup of entertainment for fans.
