Chon Saan Tightens Delivery Rules to Protect Drivers Amid Rising Robberies

Businessman Lee Mark Chang is tightening delivery rules in parts of Belize City, and it’s all about keeping his drivers safe. Chang says past incidents, including assaults and robberies, have forced his restaurant to stop delivering to high-risk areas like Pelican and Antelope Street extensions. And now, similar problems are popping up in Lake Independence, prompting Chon Saan Palace to ask customers to meet drivers at safer, more accessible spots. Chang admits it’s a tough call but says protecting staff comes first.

“A while back we had to stop delivery in extension area of Pelican, Antelope Street extension. When our delivery guys go back there, they either get maced, robbed, assaulted, everything, the whole nine yards and even one of our guys got killed some years ago. So, there are certain areas we don’t go into. We call the customer, come out for your food to the main and we can deliver your food. Usually, they do come out. Martins was not in that scope but recently we have been having a lot of issues in that area. And before anything happens to one of our drivers, we want them to be safe. So, we are asking our customers to come out in the main or come out to one for the streets where you are comfortable, the driver is comfortable and safety is not an issue for the drivers. It was a hard choice to make but safety is tantamount and first.”
