New Police Substation Coming to Caye Caulker in $1.5M Contract
The Government of Belize has signed a $1.5 million contract with Coleman Construction Limited to build a new police substation on Caye Caulker, a move officials say will significantly strengthen security on the growing tourism island.
The project, facilitated through the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Economic Transformation, will deliver more than 3,500 square feet of modern workspace, including a domestic violence unit, secure evidence room, crime investigation room, and conference facilities.
Minister of Home Affairs Oscar Mira said the current conditions are inadequate and the new building is urgently needed. “This will greatly enhance the working conditions of officers and the security of residents and visitors,” he said.
The project is being funded by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) and is expected to take about 12 months to complete. Mira described it as “a substantial investment into the safety of the people of Caye Caulker.”
Area Representative Andre Perez, who witnessed the signing, said the substation forms part of the government’s broader ‘Plan Belize’ initiative, which also includes plans for a new high school on the island.
