After months of delays and rain, the 2026 sugar crop will start Monday, January 19. Prime Minister Briceño says investments in roads and productivity are showing results, and with a new agreement between the Belize Sugarcane Farmers Association and Belize Sugar Industries, this year could signal a turnaround for the industry.

“Well, a lot of the work, a lot of road works have been done. I think we spend about two million dollars. Is it enough? No. is there more to do? Yes, but the rains have not stopped. But what is important is that in this crop, now that the BSCFA has already signed an agreement with the BSI to be able to start the crop. From the looks of what we’re seeing, the crop last year, it was very bleak projections, but our government invested about three million dollars to fight fusarium and the result, we’re seeing the results. And it seems that this year the productivity and the quality of the cane has improved.”
