Wesley College in Belize City has reduced single-use plastic waste on its campus by more than 85% over the past year, following the introduction of a refillable water system.

Sea of Life, which supports the project, says the change has sharply reduced the use of plastic water pouches that were once common among students.

The project is part of the organization’s Plastic Solution Academy, which is supported by the Belize Fund and focuses on practical ways to reduce plastic waste in schools and communities. As part of this work, the organization has been testing alternative materials, including sargassum, in an effort to reduce dependence on plastic.

Sea of Life says it plans to expand the programme to additional schools across the country.
