Trump Says World “Not Secure” Without US Control of Greenland

US President Donald Trump has told Norway’s prime minister he no longer feels bound to “think purely of peace” after failing to win the Nobel Peace Prize, again repeating his demand that the United States take control of Greenland.

In a text message sent to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Trump accused Norway of denying him the award, saying, “Considering your country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of peace, although it will always be predominant… The world is not secure unless we have complete and total control of Greenland.” CBS News confirmed the authenticity of the message.

Støre responded by clarifying that the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by an independent committee, not the Norwegian government. The 2025 prize went to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, who last week presented her medal to Trump, though the Nobel Foundation later stressed the award cannot be transferred.

He added that he and Finnish President Alexander Stubb had urged Trump to de‑escalate tensions over proposed Greenland‑related tariffs and suggested a three‑way call. Trump instead repeated his demand for US control of the Arctic island, arguing Denmark cannot protect it from Russia or China.

Over the weekend, Trump threatened to impose a 10% tariff on goods from eight NATO allies in February if they oppose his proposal, warning the rate could rise to 25% by June.

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer responded that Greenland’s future “belongs to the people of Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark alone”, calling tariffs against allies “wrong”.
