Can Red Bank be Convinced to Support Scarlet Macaw Sanctuary?
The government is tapping the brakes, for now, on plans to create a scarlet macaw sanctuary in the Maya Mountains near Red Bank Village. Residents pushed back hard during a consultation last week, and the proposal was flatly rejected. But the idea isn’t dead. Minister of Sustainable Development Orlando Habet believes that with more dialogue and clearer communication, the community could eventually come on board. And today, Prime Minister John Briceño echoed that same optimism, saying the conversation with residents is far from over.

“Minister Habet, has not given us an update on that matter. What I do believe that setting up a sanctuary for this current macaw is very important. And I believe that with proper communication and proper discussion and discussions with where you can meet the villagers and with the respect and to make the case why it is important and how they can benefit. I believe if we do that, I think we can be able to convince them that is in the interest of everyone to have another sanctuary for the scarlet macaw.”
