Jerry Enriquez Wins Leave to Sue JLSC
On Friday, we told you about social activist Jerry Enriquez taking the Judicial and Legal Services Commission to court. You’ll recall that late last year, the JLSC threw out his complaint. But Enriquez insists that the commission got it wrong, he says the evidence he presented was detailed, compelling, and should never have been dismissed. So, he applied to the High Court for permission to challenge that decision, and he got the green light. With that approval in hand, the case is now moving forward. Today, we asked Attorney General Anthony Sylvestre for his take on the brewing legal fight. He offered a bit of context, noting that this isn’t the first time the JLSC has been brought before the courts.
Anthony Sylvestre, Attorney General
“You actually had a matter that went all the way to the CCJ where there was a challenge with the judicial and legal services commission decision relating to then Justic of Appeal Awich. The Bar Association had brought a complaint against Justice Awich claiming that he ought to have been removed form office due to misbehavior, misbehavior they alleged is that he did not complete his judgment within time. It did not pass the first stage at the JLSC, there was an appeal and the matter eventually reached the CCJ. So short answer to your question, no this is not the first time.”
