EU Considers Tariff Retaliation After Trump’s Greenland Threat

President Donald Trump’s push to claim Greenland has stirred tensions with Europe, threatening trade and NATO unity ahead of his trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

The dispute over the Arctic island, part of Denmark, has already prompted talk of retaliatory tariffs from the European Union. Trump is scheduled to arrive in Davos on Jan. 21 for the annual gathering of global business and political leaders.

In the early hours of January 20, Trump posted a series of messages on Truth Social. Including an AI-generated image showing him planting an American flag on Greenland with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio beside a sign declaring: “US TERRITORY. EST 2026.”

The posts came as EU leaders discussed tariffs on $108 billion worth of U.S. goods, a response to Trump’s threat of 10% tariffs on goods from eight NATO allies opposing his Greenland plan.

Trump has insisted he will “get” the island for the United States, even by force if necessary. Over the weekend, he told Norway’s prime minister that his push was partly driven by disappointment at not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.

Asked today if the plan could split NATO, Trump said, “I think we will work something out where NATO will be very happy.” He also dismissed concerns from Greenland residents, adding, “When I speak to them, I’m sure they’ll be thrilled.”
