Chebat Says Over 20 Internet Providers in Belize

As Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) seeks Cabinet approval to acquire SpeedNet, Public Utilities Minister Michel Chebat says he does not believe the deal would create a broadband monopoly, pointing to the existence of more than 20 licensed internet providers in the country.

Chebat made the comments on Tuesday after BTL presented its acquisition proposal to Cabinet. He noted that the Cabinet has not yet made a decision and will do so after BTL concludes its ongoing consultations.

The minister also confirmed that the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) is preparing a statutory instrument to ensure internet rates and service packages remain unchanged during any transition period.

Asked directly about monopoly concerns, Chebat replied, “I don’t know that there is a monopoly. As far as I know there are about 23 other broadband providers in this country.”

A 2024 report by the International Trade Administration stated that while BTL is the largest internet service provider in Belize, 27 companies have been granted licenses to operate. Still, questions remain on whether the average Belizean is aware of these other service providers.

BTL’s presentation to Cabinet followed consultations with the Social Security Board, the Belize Communications Workers’ Union, and other stakeholders.

BTL Chairman Markhelm Lizarraga described the meeting as productive, saying Cabinet raised several questions about the proposal. “I think it went very well. I think Cabinet was very engaged,” he said.
