PM Dismisses Corruption Allegations as “Mischief”
Prime Minister John Briceño has dismissed recent allegations of corruption within the Ministry of Rural Transformation, describing the claims as an attempt to “create mischief.”
The allegations surfaced after a private message containing accusations about road works, procurement, and contract approvals was accidentally posted to Cabinet Secretary Stuart Leslie’s WhatsApp status before being deleted.
Briceño told reporters the message originated from a number in Mexico. “So obviously, when you see that kind of thing, you know that something is wrong,” he said. He explained that the message had been sent to him, which he then forwarded to the Cabinet Secretary to pass along to the CEO and minister, but it was mistakenly posted instead.
PM Briceño said checks with suppliers, including Benny’s, confirmed no improper transactions had taken place. “I had somebody check with Benny’s, and they’re saying they have done no business with the Ministry of Rural Transformation.”
He added that most of the ministry’s spending comes from European Union funds, which follow strict procurement rules.
Briceño said there was little to investigate.
