Guatamala’s Foreign Minister Carlos Ramiro Martinez Alvarado said Guatemala has followed the International Court of Justice’s process closely and will continue collaborating with the Organisation of American States (OAS).

During today’s engagement with the new OAS Secretary-General representative and Foreign Minister Francis Fonseca as “an essential part of the collaboration between our two countries.”

Martinez Alvarado stated Guatemala is committed to complying with international law. “With a firm ‘yes’, I respond to your question,” he said when asked if the country will respect the ICJ final ruling regardless of the outcome.

He also addressed the documented incursions by Guatemalan forces in the Sarstoon. He said that both nations have implemented measures to reduce tensions. “The objective is reducing the tension across the entire zone, including the Sarstoon River. There have been incidents that were, unfortunately, inevitable. However, Guatemala remains committed to reducing the tensions that lead to those incidents,” he said.

The Sarstoon remains a flashpoint in bilateral relations. Both governments signal continued dialogue and adherence to international protocols.
