BCCI Wants “Transparent Consultation” With BTL
The Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) is reiterating its call for transparency in the ongoing proposed acquisition of SpeedNet by Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL).
In a statement today, BCCI acknowledged the government’s decision to allow continued consultation following this week’s Cabinet presentation.
“Any such transaction demands a thorough, meaningful, and inclusive consultation process,” it said. BCCI pointed to the importance of assessing impacts on market competition, pricing, service quality, and the broader economy.
The BCCI has invited BTL, a Chamber member, to present to its Executive Council and wider membership to provide clarity and allow stakeholders to ask questions. “The purpose of this engagement is to facilitate a transparent and informed dialogue,” the statement added.
BTL chairman Mark Lizarraga has argued that the company can absorb Speednet’s customers at minimal extra cost, potentially safeguarding prices and jobs, while supporting the country’s digital growth.
However, the Chamber says detailed analysis and open discussion are essential before any deal moves forward.
“We urge all decision-makers to fulfil their duty to ensure a process characterized by openness and rigorous analysis,” BCCI added.
