UDP Says Parliamentary Bill Gives Executive Too Much Control

UDP senators and civil society members have raised serious concerns over the National Assembly Powers, Privileges, and Immunities Bill 2025, saying it could weaken Parliament’s ability to hold the government accountable.

In a statement today, the party singled out section 15(2), which requires public officers to get the Governor General’s approval before giving evidence or producing documents on “state affairs.”

“Since the Governor General acts on executive advice, this effectively allows the Executive to control participation in parliamentary inquiries and restrict the flow of information to Parliament,” the UDP said.

It added, “This requirement frustrates the work of parliamentary committees, delays investigations, and undermines the Senate’s constitutional role as an accountability chamber.”

The UDP also flagged constitutional risks. It cited vague language and potential breaches of due process, separation of powers, and fair trial rights.

Though the bill did not pass, it has now been sent to committee for revision. The UDP called on the government to provide legislative drafters to address and fix the bill’s many concerns.
