Upgrades Coming to Orange Walk and PG Hospitals… After 1 Year?

The Government of Belize has begun a year‑long study to plan upgrades for the Northern Regional Hospital in Orange Walk Town and the Punta Gorda Community Hospital in Toledo District.

The study, funded by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), will examine current services and infrastructure, identify gaps, and propose improvements.

The consultancy contract was awarded to BIAS Architects and VIELCA Ingenieros, hired to carry out the feasibility study and design work.

As part of the first phase, the consultants visited Belize from January 21 to 23. They toured the Northern Regional Hospital with Health Minister Kevin Bernard and Orange Walk Mayor Ladrick Sheppard, then met with Minister Oscar Requena, Minister Osmond Martinez, and Punta Gorda Mayor Carlos Galvez at the Punta Gorda Hospital.

During the visits, the team spoke with hospital administrators and technical staff to hear directly about challenges on the ground.

Officials say the findings will guide how the hospitals are upgraded, with the aim of improving patient care and meeting the demands of growing communities.

Construction will only begin once the study is complete.
