NTUCB Demands Public Consultations on BTL Deal

Beyond calling for the deal to be put on ice, the NTUCB is taking its objection a step further. The union wants BTL to hold national public consultations before anything is signed, sealed, or delivered. President Ella Waight says the Congress isn’t stopping there. They’ve already begun seeking legal advice to determine whether the acquisition can be challenged in court. And if all else fails, Waight made it clear, they’re prepared to hit the streets in protest if that’s what it takes to make their concerns heard.

Ella Waight, President, NTUCB

“BTL has to allow for public consultation to happen, whether they want to include a next level then that is ok. If they do not support public consultation then why did they hurriedly come to the NTUC and other stakeholders to have these presentation? Because, they understand the importance of it. They wanted to capture these special unit to say yes. Their ultimate goal was for us to say yes, we agree to it. So, it was only to capture these specific units and hopefully go back with a yes. That is not enough for an entity, an institution like BTL. We have been getting some legal advice because sometimes the route to go is through the courts. We are still coordinating and consulting and planning with other stakeholders. As you know, this is not just a no from NTUCB. It is a no from many other entities that have people they represent. If it takes going to the streets, putting more pressure n this no we are saying then that is what will happen.”
