Belize Moves Toward Solar Power
Belize Electricity Limited (BEL), together with the Government of Belize and the International Finance Corporation, has started the process to develop up to 80 megawatts of large solar power projects across the country.
In a press release issued January 26, BEL said it has issued a ‘Request for Prequalification’ to identify private companies capable of developing solar power projects at three to four locations nationwide.
The projects are expected to follow an Independent Power Producer model, meaning selected companies would be responsible for financing, building, owning, and operating the solar plants over a 25-year period, while BEL would purchase the electricity generated.
According to BEL, the project is meant to help Belize reach its goal of producing 75% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030, reduce the need to import electricity, and improve the reliability of power supply.
The ‘Request for Prequalification’ marks the first stage of the procurement process. BEL noted that only companies that meet the required criteria at this stage will be invited to submit full proposals later.
