Honduras Swears in New President

Conservative businessman backed by US President Donald Trump, Nasry “Tito” Asfura, was officially sworn in today as president of Honduras at the Congress building in Tegucigalpa.

The 67-year-old secured his four-year term after a razor-thin November 2025 election marked by disputes over the vote count.

Asfura secured just over 40% of the vote, edging right-leaning centrist Salvador Nasralla by more than 39%. The ruling Libre party’s candidate, Rixi Moncada, placed third with 19%.

Electoral authorities said Asfura won by a margin of 0.74%, which forced officials to hand-count about 15% of tally sheets.

Asfura’s win, according to Reuters, gives Trump another ally in Latin America. Days before polling, Trump publicly endorsed Asfura. He warned Honduras of facing “catastrophic results” if Asfura lost.

On the eve of the election, Trump pardoned former Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernandez, from Asfura’s party, who was serving a 45-year prison sentence in the United States for drug trafficking. Hernandez was convicted of helping to smuggle 400 tons of cocaine into the United States.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio later congratulated Asfura for his victory, saying Washington “looks forward to working with his administration.”
