BTL Accuses Protesters of Trespassing, Intimidation
Belize Telemedia Limited is speaking out tonight, issuing a strong statement after protesters forced their way onto the company’s compound this morning. In its release, BTL condemns what it calls unlawful trespassing, saying several demonstrators ignored police instructions and created an unsafe situation for both employees and customers. According to the company, a board meeting was held today, but BTL stresses it had nothing to do with the proposed Speednet acquisition that fueled the demonstration. Instead, the meeting was reportedly focused on internal human‑resource matters tied to a 2025 court ruling. BTL says the protest disrupted normal operations and appeared designed to pressure its board into abandoning its governance responsibilities, something the company insists it will not do. Calling the day’s events “regrettable and counterproductive,” BTL says it will not tolerate any attempts to intimidate or harass its directors or staff, and it is now working closely with authorities to address what unfolded. The telecom provider also warns that incidents like this morning’s unrest don’t just impact business, they risk undermining national economic security.
