Cold Front Bringing Chilly Weekend Temperatures

Belizeans should brace for a chilly weekend as a series of cold fronts sweep across the country, Chief Meteorologist Ronald Gordon says.

“We have been experiencing quite some low temperatures over the past few days,” Gordon told News Five. “We’re expecting temperatures to fall even more over the weekend into early next week.”

The coldest stretch is expected Sunday night into Monday morning, with coastal areas dipping to the lower 60s, inland towns like San Ignacio and Belmopan in the lower to mid-50s, and mountain areas such as Pine Ridge seeing upper 40s.

“These are quite low for Belize, but they are not record lows,” Gordon said. Historically, temperatures have dropped as low as 46 Fahrenheit inland and 52 Fahrenheit at the airport in February of 1978.

Gordon says the cold snap comes as two cold fronts move through the country, but it will bring little rain, with clear skies creating what meteorologists call radiational cooling. Temperatures are expected to gradually rise by midweek.
