This Weekend, Guyana Comes to Belize
If there is one regional moment to watch this weekend, it is the arrival of Guyana’s president in Belize.
President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali is expected to land Sunday afternoon for a three-day official visit. His arrival marks the first time a Guyanese head of state will visit Belize.
The visit comes as Guyana’s rapid oil-driven growth continues to reshape its regional influence.
On Thursday, Prime Minister John Briceño said Belize is looking to translate that transformation into practical cooperation.
“What we are hoping to work with Guayana is to be able to have some agreements in agriculture, tourism and education and other areas we will be able to cooperate,” Briceño stated. “Oil – that is something we will have to discuss regionally to see what can be done.”
“It is kind of ironic because at one time nobody wanted to go to Guyana, and now everybody wants to go to Guyana… Now because of the tremendous wealth they have discovered with oil, the country is being transformed,” PM Briceño added.
During his stay, President Ali will also address the opening of a new session of Parliament and meet Governor General Froyla Tzalam.
