World Cancer Day 2026: ‘United by Unique’
As the world marked World Cancer Day 2026, the Belize Cancer Society urged Belizeans to see cancer not only as a disease but as a human experience.
President of the Society, Kim Simplis Barrow, said the day is about “putting cancer at the centre of the conversation” and “humanising the disease and making it people-centred.” She noted that cancer affects people differently and that “no two cancer journey is the same.”
With the year just getting started, the Society says it has a full calendar aimed at maintaining awareness and support throughout 2026.
One of the first major activities comes later this month with a cervical cancer forum scheduled for February 27 at St Catherine Academy. The event will include survivor testimonials and public discussions, with HPV testing and vaccination available on site through the Ministry of Health and Wellness in partnership with PAHO.
This year’s global theme, “United by Unique”, reflects the idea that while cancer journeys differ, communities remain united in the pursuit of better outcomes and hope for the future.
In a release, Barrow stated, “Treating cancer is not only about medicine. It is about caring for the whole person. Their mental health, their family, their financial burden…Together we can create a future where cancer care in Belize is inclusive, accessible, and truly centred on the people it serves.”
