22nd Bob Marley Tribute: “More Than Just Reggae Music”

The annual Bob Marley Tribute returns this weekend, marking 22 years of honouring the reggae legend. For organiser Joel “Dara” Robinson, the event is not just about music. It is about community, consciousness, and giving back.

Robinson, who calls himself a “grassroots man”, said Marley’s message helped shape his own life. “I grew up in the time of Crips and Bloods, and I turned to Bob’s message and music, and it humbled me,” he recalled.

Despite criticism over the years, Robinson has remained committed to hosting the tribute. “I get attacked for doing it, but I say I will stay and hold the fort,” he said.

The event has also become a way to support children in need. Robinson explained that proceeds help fund local feeding programmes. “Kids were going to school hungry. So I decided that this could help the programme,” he said.

The festival will begin at 11 a.m. at the Police Airport Authority grounds behind Marion Jones Stadium with a food fair, continuing until 1 p.m. The main tribute programme starts at 4 p.m. and will feature reggae performances and selectors.

In addition to music, attendees will have the chance to win a brand-new scooter in a raffle. The prize includes one year of insurance, a licence, a helmet, and a full tank of gas.

“It is more than just reggae music or weed smoking,” Robinson said.

Tickets and raffle entries are available by contacting Robinson at 623-3662 or at the venue on the day of the event.
