US$14 Million From Climate Fund F or Indigenous Communities
Belize is unlocking nearly fourteen million U.S. dollars in new climate financing to help indigenous communities confront rising climate threats. The funding, channeled through the Green Climate Fund, will be led by the Julian Cho Society and designed directly by Maya communities in the south. The project aims to protect traditional lands, strengthen climate‑resilient livelihoods and support community‑driven adaptation. Here’s why the region’s climate officials say it could be a game changer for indigenous people across Belize.

“We are also now working with the government of Belize to mobilize an additional fourteen million US dollars or so for an indigenous people project. This is directly through the Julian Cho society. And this project is exciting because it’s going to be one of the first indigenous people led project within the GCF. And there’s going to be some activities as well for other indigenous people in the south.”
