Sargassum Task Force on Alert as Placencia Braces for Weekend Arrival

Belize’s Sargassum Task Force is on alert, keeping a close eye on activity in the Caribbean as the country gears up for this year’s sargassum season. Earlier this week, Placencia warned residents that fresh sargassum mats could start washing ashore by the weekend, and today the Minister of Blue Economy says the task force is already putting plans in motion.

“Yes actually the sargassum task force is very active we are making the plans. I think at this point in San Pedro the barriers are about to be installed. The sargassum machines are being prepared and getting ready. There are other plans as well in terms of funding to fight this, to see if these booms can work. It is going to be a constant battle, but we are preparing for it. Sargassum task force is working as well in accessing funds, so that is important.”
