UDP Pressures Regulators Amid Oversight Concerns

The United Democratic Party is intensifying its criticism of Belize’s regulatory landscape, first accusing BTL of withholding key data and now taking aim at the Public Utilities Commission for what it calls silence in the face of a major proposed acquisition. UDP Leader Tracy Panton argues that weak oversight has left consumers unprotected and competition at risk, urging Belizeans to hold regulators accountable as the debate over market power grows louder.

“It is the responsibility of the regulator, the PUC to do a few things. First and foremost, they have a responsibility to protect the consuming public. They have a responsibility to preserve fair competition. They have a legal responsibility to prevent monopolistic practices and perhaps, most importantly, to prevent abuse of a great market power. In this case, the government appointed referees have remain silent and today we ask you the Belizean people to join us and to help us to hold the PUC to task.”
