Massive Sinkhole Opens in One of China’s Largest Cities
A massive sinkhole collapsed at a construction site in Shanghai, China, on Thursday, swallowing part of the road and nearby structures before filling with water.
CNN reported the collapse coming a day after workers detected a leak during excavation work at the site.
Authorities evacuated nearby homes and offices, and a hospital in the area suspended services as a precaution. No injuries were reported, but the intersection has been closed while crews work to stabilise the area.
Videos shared online showed the road cracking before giving way, with workers running for safety. Officials say efforts are underway to pump out the water and fill the sinkhole with concrete.
