Health officials have confirmed two cases of tuberculosis involving students in Belize City.

In a statement today, the Belize Ministry of Health and Wellness said a 16-year-old student from Edward P. Yorke High School was diagnosed on Thursday, February 12, after clinical and laboratory testing. The student has started anti-tuberculosis treatment and is responding well, according to the MOHW.

Meanwhile, a 10-year-old household member who attends Ephesus Primary School was later assessed at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Authority (KHMHA) and also diagnosed with tuberculosis. Treatment has begun as well.

“Since confirmation of these cases, the MoHW has notified the respective schools and has initiated standard public health protocols,” the MoHW said. “Contact tracing is currently underway to identify and assess individuals who may have been in close contact with the cases.”

Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection that mainly affects the lungs and spreads through the air after extended exposure to an infectious person. Common symptoms include a persistent cough lasting more than two weeks, weight loss, night sweats, fever and fatigue.

Anyone experiencing such symptoms is urged to seek medical attention. “The MoHW provides free screening, diagnostic services, and treatment for tuberculosis at all public health facilities nationwide,” the ministry added.
