BAHA Advises Urgent Tick Management for El Pilar Cattle

The Ministry of Agriculture and the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) are urging cattle farmers in Cayo District to take immediate action on the confirmed cases of anaplasmosis, commonly known as tick fever, in the El Pilar area.

The authorities said in a statement that active infection after blood tests on cattle from two farms tested positive for the tick-borne disease. Officials added that early detection is critical.

“The findings indicate active infection within the El Pilar Area and suggest a localised outbreak of tick-borne disease affecting cattle,” the ministry and BAHA said.

The Ministry advised farmers to implement comprehensive tick control programmes without delay and to consult Extension Officers or BAHA veterinarians for approved treatment options. Herds should be closely monitored for clinical signs, including anaemia, weakness, weight loss, and reduced productivity.

“Follow all guidance provided by the Extension Service and BAHA,” the statement added.
