BPO Credit‑Card Scam Sparks Cybercrime Crackdown
Belize police are stepping up their cybercrime crackdown as they probe a sophisticated credit‑card scam inside the BPO sector, first exposed by News Five. Commissioner Richard Rosado says investigators are tracking a cross‑border scheme with victims outside Belize, forcing officers to work with foreign partners and sift through mountains of international data. The biggest challenge is following digital trails that stretch far beyond Belize’s borders.

“Well it is a complicated, challenging investigation because it does not have root only in Belize. So, it is an extremely challenging investigation and investigators are trying to gather as much information as they can to bring the perpetrators to justice.”
Paul Lopez
“What is the most challenging aspect of it?”
Dr. Richard Rosado
“Because many of the incidents trace back to outside the country of Belize.”
Paul Lopez
“And so that requires some outside intervention or reports, tell us.”
Dr. Richard Rosado
“Remember the complainants, majority are from outside Belize.”
Paul Lopez
“And they would have to come in?”
Dr. Richard Rosado
“We would need a complainant report.”
Paul Lopez
“Outside of that, are there any laws or regulations the authorities can look at?”
Dr. Richard Rosado
“We are investigating it from what transpired within the institutions and we are trying to see what evidential material we can put together to bring those individuals to justice.”
Paul Lopez
“Reports are that you all you all have been able to identify alleged operatives from within the BPO sector. What’s the challenge if you know who they are?”
Dr. Richard Rosado
“The investigation is ongoing. Several individuals have been interviewed and the investigation is ongoing.”
Paul Lopez
“What is the FIU’s involvement in this investigation?”
Dr. Richard Rosado
“In all financial crimes the police department has always engaged our partners, the Financial Intelligence Unit.”
