Victim Detained After Being Shot, Family Speaks Out
Akeem Jones, 32, of Cotton Tree Village, was detained today by the same police officer he accused of shooting him in the arm on Tuesday, according to the family.
As previously reported, Jones alleges the officer fired at him while chasing a relative, hitting him from behind. The injury left him unable to work for the next two months.
Jones was discharged on Tuesday and was on his way to file a report with the Professional Standards Branch when he was stopped and taken to the Roaring Creek police station.
His sister, Norma Lemott, has spoken out to News 5, saying that the family “is getting a lawyer, because we nuh di leave this like that.”
“They no mek we talk to ah, no mek we get close to ah,” Lemott added. “We also di hear that the police say that he nuh happy Akeem gone on the media and he wanted to press charges on him for assaulting a police officer.”
According to Lemott, the family believes the detention could be a “cover” after Jones spoke to the media about the shooting. She said, “how will you shoot someone and then turn around and try play victim and say how they wanted to take your gun because you don’t gone on media?”
