Tomb Desecration Suspect Sent to Prison

A man believed to suffer from mental illness is accused of breaking into a Hattieville woman’s tomb and tampering with her body just a day after her burial. This morning, thirty-three‑year‑old Jonathan Abner Flores of Mile 15 was taken to the Belize City Magistrate’s Court. He appeared unrepresented, and because of concerns about his mental state, the court only read the charge to him. A relative told the magistrate that Flores needs medical help and that the family plans to take him to a private doctor. The Senior Magistrate ordered a psychiatric evaluation but noted that the offense is bailable. When asked if the family would post bail, the relative said they preferred he stay in custody for his own safety. The magistrate insisted she could not remand him solely for safety concerns and reminded the family that Flores would go to prison until bail is posted. She advised them to return with the psychiatric report once it’s completed. During the hearing, Flores became agitated, shouting in court and interrupting the proceedings. He was granted bail in the amount of one thousand, five hundred dollars and given a return date of May fourth, 2026. But by noon, no one had posted bail, and Flores was sent to the Belize Central Prison.
