Court Orders Removal of Terror Group from Belize’s Sanctions List

Following a High Court order on March 10, 2026, the group Al-Nusrah Front for the People of Levant has been removed from the country’s Consolidated Sanctions List under the Money Laundering and Terrorism Prevention Act.

Al‑Nusrah Front, also known as Jabhat al‑Nusra, was an al‑Qaeda‑linked militant group active in Syria during the country’s civil war. Formed in 2012, it carried out hundreds of bombings and insurgent attacks against the Syrian government and security forces. The group’s stated goal was to overthrow the Assad regime and expand its influence regionally and globally.

The U.S. State Department designated the group a terrorist organisation in December 2012. By July 2025, the U.S. announced plans to revoke the terror designation for the group due to its evolution and changing political dynamics in Syria.

Sanctions lists are used to block groups or individuals linked to terrorism or money laundering from accessing Belize’s financial system. Removal from the list means that any assets previously frozen in Belize can now be released.

The FIU regularly updates the sanctions list to reflect global developments.
