U.S. Maintains Belize at Level 2 in Updated Travel Advisory

The U.S. Department of State has maintained Belize at a Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution travel advisory, citing crime as the primary concern.

In its latest update issued March 12, 2026, the advisory level and risk indicators remain unchanged, though the summary was updated. U.S. officials warn that while violent crime can occur in tourist areas, the highest concentration continues to be on the south side of Belize City.

Crimes listed include sexual assault, armed robbery, home invasions, and murder, with much of the violence linked to gang activity. The advisory notes that local law enforcement faces resource limitations, and many crimes remain unresolved. Emergency medical services are also described as limited, with serious injuries often requiring evacuation abroad.

The south side of Belize City is classified separately as Level 3: Reconsider Travel. U.S. government employees are strongly discouraged from traveling south of the Haulover Creek Canal to Fabers Road due to crime concerns. They are also advised against driving between cities after dark.

Visitors are advised to avoid walking or driving at night, refrain from displaying valuables, and not physically resist robbery attempts.
