Canada Urges Citizens to Exercise Caution When Traveling to Belize
The Government of Canada has issued an updated travel advisory for Belize, urging citizens to exercise a high degree of caution due to elevated levels of violent crime across the country.
Southside Belize City, in particular, has been flagged as a high-risk area, with authorities warning against non-essential travel due to gang and drug-related violence, including murders and shootings. The advisory says that tourists are typically not targeted directly, but being in the wrong place at the wrong time could put visitors at risk.
According to the statement, violent crime, including armed robberies, assaults, burglaries, and homicides, occurs in multiple regions, including popular tourist destinations such as Caye Caulker, San Pedro, Placencia, and Belmopan. It adds that petty crime, like pickpocketing and bag snatching, is also common, and travelers are advised to safeguard their persons. It warns that Southside Belize City, in particular, has been flagged as a high-risk areaal belongings, avoid displaying signs of wealth, and travel in groups whenever possible.
The advisory also highlights risks related to health and safety, including poor road conditions, limited emergency medical services, unsafe water and food, and hazards during adventure or water-based activities. Women, 2SLGBTQI+ travelers, and those attending mass gatherings are urged to exercise extra caution due to harassment and potential safety risks.
Visitors are reminded that Belizean laws are strictly enforced, with severe penalties for drug and firearm offenses, and that medical facilities, particularly in rural areas, may be under-equipped.
The Government of Canada advises all travelers to register with local consular services, monitor local news, follow the instructions of authorities, and take precautions to reduce personal risks while in Belize.
