Agriculture Boost as Belize Eyes El Salvador Market
Tonight, Belize is taking another step toward expanding its agricultural footprint in the region. Government officials met this week with their counterparts in Guatemala to clear the way for Belizean products to move more easily through that country on their journey to El Salvador. Minister of Agriculture Rodwell Ferguson led the delegation, along with senior technical officials from BAHA and OIRSA. Their discussions centered on one key issue: making sure sealed containers carrying Belizean agricultural goods can travel smoothly through Guatemala as part of a new trade arrangement with El Salvador. It’s all tied to a partial scope agreement Belize is preparing to sign with El Salvador, an agreement expected to open new opportunities for local producers. Officials say a formal Memorandum of Understanding should be finalized by the end of April, outlining exactly which products will move across borders and under what conditions. By all accounts, the talks were cordial and productive, setting the stage for Belizean goods to soon access a major regional market that already imports much of its food from abroad. For Belize, which has been lobbying hard to secure more international buyers, this could mark a significant boost for farmers and exporters looking to grow their reach.
