Heavy Sargassum Influx Forecast as Government Rolls Out National Response

Belize’s coastline is once again on alert as forecasters predict another heavy wave of sargassum headed for shore. The National Meteorological Service has warned of significant accumulations affecting San Pedro, Caye Caulker, Hopkins, and Placencia, communities that have repeatedly borne the brunt of the region’s growing seaweed crisis.

The warning has already prompted action on the ground. In San Pedro, the Town Council on Monday began deploying sargassum corrals along the shoreline. The floating barriers are intended to contain the seaweed before it spreads across beaches, offering some relief to hotels and businesses that continue to spend heavily on daily cleanup efforts to protect their properties and the tourism product.

The issue also took center stage in the National Assembly the same day, where Minister of Blue Economy Andre Perez described sargassum as “one of the most pressing and visible challenges of our communities.” He noted that across the Caribbean, including Belize, sargassum influxes have increased “in frequency and intensity,” affecting beaches, tourism, fishing livelihoods, and even public health in coastal areas.

“For communities like San Pedro and Caye Caulker, Hopkins, Placencia and other coastal communities, it affects our beaches, impacts tourism, disrupts fishing activities, places pressure on public health,” Perez told lawmakers.

He stressed that the government is not approaching the problem as a short-term inconvenience. “This government is not treating sargassum as a seasonal inconvenience. We are treating it as a national priority,” he said.

According to Perez, the Ministry of Blue Economy and Marine Conservation is developing what he called a “long-term scalable national response,” which includes improved collection systems, environmentally sound disposal methods, and exploration of “conversion and value creation opportunities.”

“Because even in challenge this government sees opportunity,” Perez added.
