The government is now looking at ways to regulate the rental market, as prices continue to climb across Belize.

For many low-income families, a single room rental can consume a significant portion of their monthly income, leaving little room for food, utilities, or other basic needs.

“Some unscrupulous owners of these small one-room [apartments] that they rent would cut off the water and lights,” Prime Minister John Briceño told reporters.

He added that Cabinet has had repeated discussions on the issue, calling the practice unacceptable but acknowledging that any fix has to work for both sides.

“We need to find a way how we can find a balance, because at the same time these people need to collect their rent. They made an investment, and it is expected,” Briceño said. “And if you make it too easy, some people will not pay rent. So it is a fine line we have to walk.”

No specific legislation or timeline has been announced.
