Can Roving Patrols Curb Ladyville’s Rising Road Accidents?

Police are implementing moving patrols in the Ladyville area as the number of road incidents rises in recent weeks.

ASP Stacy Smith attributed the increase directly to the area’s rapid expansion beyond Belize City’s outskirts. “With all the hustle and bustle that comes along with it, the propensity for incidents similarly exists,” she said.

The department has moved away from fixed checkpoints, instead deploying roving patrols during peak hours when drunk driving is most likely. The shift is designed to keep drivers guessing and deter those who might otherwise take their chances at a known checkpoint location.

Despite these efforts, Smith said that responsibility ultimately lies with drivers. Checkpoints and patrols can only do so much, and motorists must remain accountable, particularly when weather conditions are poor or road works create additional hazards.

“The onus remains on the individual drivers to take heed, pay attention, and drive cautiously on the road,” she said.

The warning follows a fatal crash early Saturday morning that killed thirty-year-old Darynl Humes and left two others hospitalised.
