A small village in southern Belize just took a big step into the digital age. On Friday, the Ministry of Rural Transformation and Community Development partnered with the United Nations Development Programme to officially open a new Community Digital Hub in Na Luum Ca, Toledo District. Minister of Rural Transformation Oscar Requena led the ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking a milestone aimed at expanding access to technology and opportunity in rural communities.

“We see the inauguration of the digital hub. The digital hub has six computers, six desktops. We also have printers and in the very near future we are going to ensure that we connect these computers, so that the students and the community can have access to these computers. And I will tell you, apart from supporting our students so that they can learn how to use the computer and get on the internet and do their assignment and everything else. This computer hub, this digital hub should help our parents so that they can also learn a little bit more about  how to use a computer. And today, you can now apply for a birth paper online, you don’t have to go all the way to Belize City. You can do it right from here. Once you are connected with the internet, you can apply for your birth paper, your marriage certificate and a lot of other documents that are important to you.”
