BTB Condemns Racist Remark by Licensed Tour Guide

The Belize Tourism Board has denounced the racist remark made online by licensed tour guide Alexander Mes against Miss Universe Ivory Coast, Olivia Yacé, during her visit to Belize. In an official release, the BTB called the comment highly inappropriate and confirmed that the Tour Guide Committee has launched a disciplinary review to determine the appropriate sanctions. Yacé, who was in Belize collaborating with Miss Universe Belize Isabella Zabaneh, became the target of the slur after the two posted a photo together. Zabaneh said she was disappointed that such a remark came from someone tasked with welcoming visitors, while Yacé urged young women to stay positive in the face of negativity, adding that the incident would not affect her warm impression of Belize. Mes issued an apology on Monday, but public backlash continues as the BTB underscores that Belizean tour guides represent the nation and must uphold the highest standards of professionalism and respect for all guests.
