Seventeen-year-old Davia Richardson made history as the first Belizean at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore. Now she is home for a few days, coaching kids and visiting her father’s grave.

Richardson arrived in the country today, accompanied by her mother, long-time coach, and sports psychologist, and says she is eager to engage with Belize’s swimming community during her short school break.

Based in New York, Richardson’s first stop was the YWCA pool in Belize City, where young swimmers from the HUB Resource Centre gathered to meet her. “It is good to be back. It is really cold in New York, so I love the weather here. I love seeing all the swimmers here, and it makes me want to get in right now,” she told News Five.

Richardson explained that her journey in swimming began twelve years ago and has taken her across the globe. “You can get really far with a lot of hard work and determination and a really good support system,” she said.

Her visit is organised in collaboration with the Belize Aquatics Federation, led by President Giovanni Alamilla, who confirmed that Richardson requested to spend her break in Belize to give back. Over the next two days, she will help run a free swimming camp for local youth.

Richardson also shared personal plans to visit her father’s resting place at Lord Ridge Cemetery. “My dad passed away when I was twelve, and he is buried here. Knowing I am representing him and his country to the best of my ability helps me get through hardship and challenges,” she said.
