Caye Caulker Preparing to Protest Rumored Sale of Police Station Land
The Caye Caulker Village Council is pushing back against any proposed sale or transfer of a key piece of land currently designated for police use on the island. In a strongly worded release issued today, the Council says it “unequivocally rejects” any attempt to sell, lease, or otherwise divest Parcel eight-fifteen, describing it as critical communal land essential for public safety and security. The Council also raised concerns about what it calls a complete lack of consultation, noting that neither local leaders nor residents were engaged in any discussions surrounding the property. According to the village council, the parcel sits near a community basketball court and shared public space, and any transfer could negatively impact youth engagement, emergency response and overall community life. The Council is now demanding a halt to any ongoing processes, full disclosure from central government, and meaningful consultation before any decisions are made. And while concerns are being raised about a potential sale, our land registry search shows that, as of today, Parcel eight-fifteen remains under the ownership of the Belize Police Department. We are also reliably informed that the Village Council has begun the process of applying for permission to stage a protest. The Council says it is prepared to take legal and administrative action to ensure the land remains in public hands. They have scheduled a community meeting to discuss their next course of action with residents for six thirty tomorrow evening.
