Bus Operators Seek Relief, Government Hits Pause
While bus operators press government for relief, the Transport Ministry is pressing pause. Minister of Transport Dr. Louis Zabaneh says Cabinet has taken note of the Belize Bus Association’s appeal but is not ready to act just yet. The association has asked government to step in, warning that rising diesel prices are driving up operating costs and could eventually affect public transportation services. But Zabaneh says officials are keeping a close eye on global fuel price trends before making any decisions, signaling a wait‑and‑see approach as costs continue to fluctuate.

“We reported back to them the decision of Cabinet, which is that Cabinet is observing the world prices for fuel and over the next few weeks, we will see how the trend goes. Like the rest of the world we are hoping it will stabilize and prices will return to some lower levels as it were a few months ago. In the event we don’t have that kind of downward trend, then Cabinet is prepared to reconsider the request. But at this point in time, asking the BBA to allow for a few more weeks to transpire so we could observe the trend of world prices.”
The association says it will hold an emergency meeting with its members to discuss the way forward.
