The BBC, one of the world’s most recognised news organisations, is preparing to cut up to 2,000 jobs in its largest downsizing in more than a decade.

Staff were told of the plan at an all‑hands meeting on Wednesday. The cuts will affect about 10% of the BBC’s 21,500 employees and come as the broadcaster faces growing financial pressures.

The move is being set in motion ahead of Matt Brittin, a former Google executive, taking over as director general next month. Outgoing chief Tim Davie had already warned that the BBC needed to trim 10% of its £6 billion annual costs over the next three years.

Interim director general Rhodri Talfan Davies told staff the corporation must save an additional £500 million by 2028. He said rising production costs, pressure on licence fee income, and global economic turbulence have widened the gap between income and spending.

Union leaders warned the cuts would be “devastating” for staff and could weaken the BBC’s ability to deliver on its public mission.
