Hurricane Hunter Plane Set to Land in Belize

The U.S. Air Force’s 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron “Hurricane Hunters” aircraft is touching down in Belize this week.

While most people only hear about these planes during the hurricane season, the plane will be showcased by the Belize Meteorological Service, which has opened tours for schools and organised groups.

Chief Meteorologist Ronald Gordon stressed that the visit is not a walk-in event. “It is not open to the public in such a way that anybody can go there,” he explained, noting that registration was advertised through the service’s social media platforms.

“So several schools, a few other groups actually booked slots to see the aircraft. The opening to those groups will be from 10:30 until 3:30,” he said.

On Thursday, the specialised aircraft will be on display at the Phillip Goldson International Airport, offering Belizeans a closer look at how critical weather data is collected during extreme events.
