BYM Unveils Community Mural
The Belize Youth Movement has officially completed a community mural on Otro Benque Road at the entrance of Trial Farm Village.
Speaking to News Five, Glenn Tillett said, “Today we did not just finish a mural, we left a mark on our community.”
The mural was intentionally placed at a high-traffic location. Tillett explained, “The mural is located on Otro Benque road at the very entrance of Trial Farm Village. We chose a space people pass every day. We placed it there intentionally so it can serve as a daily reminder of who we are and where we’re going if we come together as a community.”
According to Tillett, the artwork carries a deeper meaning. “At its core, the mural represents a bridge between the leaders of the past and the new generation rising today. It honors those who came before us while making it clear that the responsibility to lead and serve now rests with us. It has a responsibility to inspire and encourage young people to do good and good will ultimately follow. Always do your best is also painted on the mural.”
The design process was collaborative, particularly with the young people who participated. “The design came through our groups collaboration, especially with the young people involved. We came together and listened to their voice and welcomed their input.”
So far, the feedback has been encouraging. “The response so far has been positive. Residents appreciate the initiative and are connecting with it because they see the positive intentions and the effort we are putting in as a movement.”
There are already suggestions for improvements. “People have suggested we add colored lights to enhance the mural at night so that’s something we might look into. We ask the community to commit to maintaining and protecting the mural because it represents our identity and our direction.”
For Tillett, this is just the start. “This is what happens when we stop talking and actually do something positive. This is what happens when you do things from the heart. This is what happens when the youths lead and get things done. This is only the beginning.”
