Briceño Leads High-Level Talks on Small States at Global Finance Meetings

Prime Minister John Briceño on Friday presided over a high-level discussion on the economic realities facing small states, as part of the 2026 Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group in Washington, D.C..

The session centred on a newly introduced Small States Strategy by the World Bank Group, which places a strong emphasis on job creation while seeking to address the structural weaknesses and external shocks that continue to challenge smaller economies.

In outlining the situation confronting these countries, Briceño pointed to tightening fiscal conditions, rising costs for energy and food, and the escalating effects of climate change as key concerns. He stressed that policy responses must be specifically designed to reflect the vulnerabilities and scale of small states.

The engagement formed part of wider discussions among global financial leaders, policymakers, and development partners gathered in Washington to examine economic trends and coordinate responses to ongoing global challenges.
